FiberNet is a network of American fiber diffraction groups, established in 2003 with NSF support. The goal of the network is to develop and disseminate fiber diffraction methods through a program of software development and a series of retreats and workshops. FiberNet is particularly interested in biological fiber diffraction, but fiber diffraction methods for biological and non-biological applications are generally similar, and we encompass all approaches and applications. FiberNet works closely with our sister organization in Europe, CCP13. The second FiberNet workshop will be held at Fall Creek Falls State Park, Pikeville, TN, August 6-9, 2006. Some participants will remember the very successful fiber diffraction meeting held at Fall Creek Falls in 1989, the first of the old "State Park meetings", others were at McCormicks Creek, Indiana in 1993 and at Jenny Wiley, Kentucky in 1997. This workshop is a continuation of both that series and the new FiberNet series, the first of which was held at Argonne National Laboratory in October, 2004. Invited speakers include R. Chandrasekaran (Purdue), Kenn Gardner (Delaware), Tom Irving (BioCAT), Paul Langan (Los Alamos), Jianpeng Ma (Baylor), Rick Millane (Canterbury, NZ), Joseph Orgel (IIT), John Squire (Imperial College, London), Gerald Stubbs (Vanderbilt), and Tim Wess (Cardiff). There will be contributed talks and poster sessions. The workshop will cover fiber diffraction results as well as practical aspects of fiber diffraction, in a format suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. The first afternoon will include an introduction to fiber diffraction led by Kenn Gardner. There will be hands-on sessions with fiber diffraction software from CCP13 and FiberNet. Register by mail, using the registration form on the FiberNet web site (fiberdiffraction.org). A deposit of $100.00 must be received as a check with the registration form by 1 June, 2006. This deposit is refundable if we receive a written request by 15 June, but not after that date. The balance of the full registration, which includes accommodation and all meals at Fall Creek Falls, will be due by 1 August, 2006. International participants may pay at the meeting, but must still register by 1 June. Full registration fee: If you have more than one accompanying guest sharing your room, please contact us for registration information. Fees will be significantly lower for children under 16. A limited number of grants, up to $200 each, are available to students or post-docs whose doctoral studies were completed less than five years ago. Requests should be on the form from the FiberNet web site, and should accompany the registration form. Preference will be given to students submitting abstracts. Applicants will be notified by 8 June, 2006. Poster presentations are strongly encouraged. Submit the abstract form on the FiberNet web site (fiberdiffraction.org) by 30 June, 2006. Invited speakers should also submit abstracts by 30 June, 2006. Applicants for student travel grants should submit abstract forms by 1 June, 2006. A block of rooms has been reserved from Sunday, August 6 to Wednesday, August 9, at the Fall Creek Fall State Park Inn (www.state.tn.us/environment/parks/parks/FallCreekFalls, go to Park Inns). The rooms will be held until June 1. Meals and accommodation are included in the registration cost. Unfortunately, registration cannot be pro-rated for shorter stays. Fall Creek Falls State Park includes the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, as well as many other streams, cascades, and waterfalls in over 20,000 acres of forests and gorges. In addition to its spectacular scenery, the park includes a golf course, tennis courts, playgrounds, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Hiking, fishing, boat and bike rentals, and an outstanding nature center are all available.
Fall Creek Falls State Park is located about 40 miles south of I-40, 115 miles from Nashville and 90 miles from Knoxville. Nashville or Knoxville airport can be used. Transport will be arranged from Nashville airport on Sunday (probably leaving about noon), and from Fall Creek Falls to Nashville airport on Wednesday (probably arriving about 3 pm). The organizing committee can advise on other arrangements for transport from Nashville. Questions about payment, meals, lodging, and meeting organization can be directed to Amy Kendall (Vanderbilt), amy.k.kendall@vanderbilt.edu, 615032202012, fax 615 343 6707. Questions about the program can be directed to Gerald Stubbs (Vanderbilt), gerald.stubbs@vanderbilt.edu, 615032202018, fax 615 343 6707, or Tom Irving (IIT and BioCAT), irving@iit.edu, 312 567 3489 , fax 312 567 3494. |
